The Dalmatian Pelican.
Kerkini Lake is an artificial reservoir located in Central Macedonia, Greece. It was created in 1932 and then redeveloped in 1980. Lake Kerkini is perfect for photographers and birdwatchers.
It is today 17 kilometers long (10,6 miles) and 5 kilometers (3,1 miles) wide. Kerkini Lake is known for its various birdlife. The lake lies along the migration route for birds on their way to the Aegean Sea, the Balkan region, the Black Sea and the Hungarian steppes. 134 bird species are normally around the lake during winter. One of these are the magnificent Dalmatian Pelican. It is these mighty birds that are our main focus during our tour. The Dalmatian Pelicans are one of the largest species of pelicans in the world. They have striking white plumage with black markings and a distinctive bright yellow pouch. These pelicans are known for their large, impressive bills and their graceful flight.
The pelicans have a amazing way of catching fish. They use their large expandable pouches to scoop up fish from the water. After catching their prey, they tilt their heads back to drain out the water and then swallow the fish whole. Its quite a remarkable sight to see.
The Dalmatian Pelicans are excellent fliers, capable of soaring through the air for long distances. They have a wingspan that can reach up to 3 meters (9.2 feet), allowing them to cover great distances during their migrations.
Around Lake Kerkini we will also observe and photograph the Great White Pelicans, Cormorants, Flamingos, young herons and other species.
We arrange workshops with local guides both winter and spring.
