Encounter the Musk Ox in Summer

The summer months transform the Dovrefjell tundra into a vibrant landscape, and this is a spectacular time to witness the musk ox.

  • See the Calves: You’ll have the chance to see and photograph newborn calves, who are irresistibly cute—like small, fluffy teddy bears!
  • Summer Coats and Social Life: Watch the herd—which numbers around 240 in summer—shed their thick winter coats for a shorter, lighter look. You may observe fascinating social behavior like grooming and play among these herd animals.

Beyond the Musk Ox: Dovrefjell’s Diverse Wildlife

While the musk ox is the star, the Dovrefjell National Park is a haven for other arctic wildlife. On our summer hikes, we are often lucky enough to spot:

  • Iconic Birds: Listen for and observe the striking Golden Plover (a constant presence on our hikes), the camouflaged Ptarmigan, and the small, migratory Northern Wheatear. You may also look up and see the majestic Golden Eagle soaring high above the mountains.
  • Elusive Mammals: Keep a lookout for wild Reindeer herds, as Dovrefjell is home to Norway’s last remaining population of wild mountain reindeer.
